Three Essential Steps When Hiring and Onboarding

The hiring and onboarding process can be tricky to navigate for all parties involved. Whether you are going through the process remotely or in person, the process can be challenging.

Hiring a new member of your team can be a challenging decision. Thankfully, there are some simple steps all employers can do to feel reassured in the hiring process and to make the best decisions without meeting the newest employee in person.

1.     Set Yourself Up for Success

The first thing, and perhaps the best thing you can do for yourself and your company during the hiring process, happens before considering a candidate. By determining and setting your expectations for the position, potential employee, workflow, and how you plan to manage the employee, you can significantly reduce the anxiety and worry that comes with hiring.

Once you hire your new employee, these guidelines will serve as examples for both new and old employees alike. Setting the tone as a company and manager goes a long way in creating a successful team and future.

2.    Do Your Research

When hiring anyone for a new position, getting the complete story of the candidate’s background and experience is crucial. Most of the time, you can bring someone in for an interview, ask them about their background face-to-face, and gain a strong understanding of who they are and would be as an employee.

When your hiring process is entirely remote, you don’t have that same luxury. When interview is complete, there is a lot more research needed to discover your potential hire’s full story. Check their references, ask them more detailed questions to get a better idea of who they are, and do your best to make sure the relationship between employer and employee will be worthwhile and beneficial for both parties.

3.    Trust the Process

At the end of the day, you have to have trust in the hiring process. You have to trust your new hire to work hard and jump in feet first, trust your team to work together and be receptive, and of course, you have to trust yourself to make the right decisions. Successful companies are built on trust and making the right hires.

Putting trust in your team and the new hire will go a long way, longer than you may even realize. A confident team can collaborate and work through adversity to create meaningful results.
